MAELSTROM
Mi fascinación por el mar, el ir y venir de las olas, las mareas, la luz y los colores reflejados en la superficie me acompaña desde hace décadas. Esta serie se centra en el maelstrom, poderosa corriente llamada Moskstraumen, situada en el norte de Noruega, cerca de las islas Lofoten. Este gigantesco vórtice en medio del mar, que succiona y a veces expulsa todo lo que se le acerca, ha inspirado a poetas y pintores. En su cuento “A descent into the Maelstrom”, escrito en 1841, Edgar Allan Poe describe la agitación, el hervor, los silbidos, el miedo que inspira, la belleza de sus paredes de ébano líquido y su torrente de gloria dorada. En este espíritu he recreado y reinterpretado el maelstrom, palabra que hoy en día se utiliza sobre todo en sentido figurado para describir la turbulencia de la mente humana.
My fascination for the sea, the coming and going of the waves, the tides, the light, and the colours reflected on the surface has been with me for decades. This series focusses on the maelstrom, a powerful current called Moskstraumen, located in the north of Norway, near the Lofoten Islands. This giant vortex in the middle of the sea, which sucks in and sometimes expels everything that comes near it, has inspired poets and painters. In his short story “A descent into the Maelstrom”, written in 1841, Edgar Allan Poe describes the heaving, boiling, and hissing, the fear it inspires, the beauty of its liquid ebony walls and flood of golden glory. In this spirit I have recreated and reinterpreted the maelstrom, a word mostly used today in the figurative sense to describe the turbulence of the human mind.
